Clare County Council has voted to retain the higher rate of local property tax for the coming term..

The local property tax is charged at a minimum rate of €90 for homes worth up to €200,000 , which applies to the majority of homeowners in Clare.

The local authority has the power to adjust the basic rate either upwards or downwards by 15% and Clare County Council has this evening voted to keep the 15% increase on the base rate.

Sinn Féin councillors Tommy Guilfoyle and Donna McGettigan opposed to the retention of the higher rate at today’s September council meeting but the proposal was defeated by 24 votes to 2.

Last year, Clare County Council collected over €9.9m from local property tax returns.
