A Clare Fianna Fail Councillor is calling for a €30,000 grant be given to people who build their own houses.

At a recent meeting of the local authority, Councillor PJ Kelly put forward a motion calling for grants to be given to people building one off houses in rural areas to thank them for helping to keep rural communities alive.

He says from his own research and speaking to experts, people building are handing over between €70,000 and €90,000 in taxes including VAT and excise duty among others to the state.

The Lissycasey Councillor says this burden needs to be eased.
