A Clare Government TD insists the Taoiseach should be using stronger wording around the need for a second emergency department in the Midwest.

It comes as Taoiseach Simon Harris has said “when it comes to the Midwest, we should have an openness to a second emergency department” pending the findings up the upcoming HIQA review.

It’s now two weeks since the UL Hospitals Group took the decision to defer scheduled care at Ennis Hospital, University Hospital Limerick and other Midwest facilities as means of dealing with overcrowding.

Meelick Fianna Fáil Deputy Cathal Crowe believes it’s “inevitable” a second ED will be needed in this region and regardless of the HIQA review’s finding, the Government should be putting plans in place.
