Clare GP Says She Feels “Cruel” Sending Patients To UHL

A Clare doctor claims Ireland’s medical work-life balance needs urgent reform to address the GP crisis.

The Rural Independents Group is set to table a motion in the Dáíl tonight, that will call on the Government to urgently respond to recruitment deficits in the sector.

Clare currently has 33% fewer GPs than the national average, and the Rural Independents claim that two-thirds of practices nationwide have reached capacity and can no longer accept new patients.

Dr Máire Finn from the Centric Health Medical Centre in Ennis says that while measures such as allowing pharmacists to offer more prescriptions would help in the short term, the pressure facing local GPs has been compounded as patients want to avoid attending the region’s main hospital.
