Clare GP Warns Of “Fatal” Consequences Of Measles Amid Cases Spike

A Clare GP is warning of the potentially fatal consequences of measles, amid a worrying spike in cases.

There’s been a 45-fold increase in cases of the viral illness across Europe between 2022 and last year while MMR vaccine uptake rates in Ireland have fallen significantly since the pandemic.

Children are more vulnerable to the illness which has cold-like symptoms and can lead to pneumonia, meningitis, blindness and seizures.

GP at Ennis Medical Centre Dr Fergus Glynn, who worked at Temple Street Hospital during the last measles epidemic, says those with chronic underlying conditions are most at risk.
