Clare’s IFA chair fears price cuts at major retailers will disincentivise people from remaining in farming.

It comes as a price war has erupted between supermarkets in Ireland after Lidl has announced reductions on over 600 products in it stores and Aldi has followed suit by slashing the cost of some items by up to 50%.

The news hasn’t been welcomed by those in the farming sector however, with Irish Farmers Association President Tim Cullinan saying “the idea that primary producers can afford to take a lower price flies in the face of higher input costs”.

Parteen-based Clare IFA chair Tom Lane believes making farmers adapt to reduced retail prices could force them out of the sector altogether.
