Clare Mother Calls For Specific Services For Children Suffering School Avoidance

A Clare mother is calling for services to be put in place to deal specifically with “school avoidance” among children suffering mental health difficulties.

Gráinne’s 14 year-old son is a second year student at an Ennis school and she believes he’s now falling into the category of children who are crippled with anxiety after the pandemic.

She’s expressed frustration, however, over having to wait a number of months for an appointment for him with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.

HSE Mid West Community Healthcare says reducing overall waiting times for CAHMS is a key priority, with recruitment underway for additional staff and a new consultant-led hub being developed in Limerick.

Gráinne has told Clare FM’s Morning Focus that she believes school avoidance issues need to be given specific attention.
