Clare plans for EU Presidency appear to be halted

The government appears to have poured cold water on calls for Clare to cash in on Ireland’s EU Presidency next year.

Clare County Council had submitted a request for an Inter-Governmental conference to be held in the county, saying such an event would provide a significant boost in terms of enterprise and exposure.

However, the Department for the Taoiseach has informed the Council that the ‘vast majority of events will be held in State-owned properties in Dublin’ for cost reasons.

Dromoland Castle hosted events during Ireland’s last Presidency in 2004, and South East Clare Fianna Fail Councillor Cathal Crowe feels that should occur once more.
