Clare residents have received more than 230,000 euro in compensation after they were barred from cutting turf on a raised bog near Doonbeg.
195 people here have applied for compensation after turfcutting at Tullaher Lough and Bog was among 53 nationwide designated a Special Area of Conservation, with turfcutting banned as a result.
168 of the people here have sought financial compensation – under the Cessation of Turf Cutting Compensation Scheme, those who are eligible a total of €23,000, payable over 15 years. Nationally these payments have amounted to nearly 3.5 million euro.
The other Clare turfcutters affected have applied for relocation to a bog where they can continue cutting turf legally.
