Clare has the second-lowest proportion of people who get the bus of any county nationwide.

Newly-published figures from Census 2022 reveal that less than 10% of people here avail of public transport when commuting.

A Central Statistics Office analysis of information gathered in the most recent Census reveals that driving a car is still by far the most popular mode of transport in this county.

Over 35,000 Clare residents said they drive a motor car which equates to almost 44% of the county’s population.

25% meanwhile said that they carry out their commute by being a passenger in a car which means that almost 70% of people here are reliant on a car for their daily commute.

By contrast, just 6% said they get the bus which makes Clare the county that has the second-lowest proportion of commuters who choose this option with Carlow having the lowest.

The Banner also has the joint third-lowest proportion of people who commute by train at less than 1%.

Looking at a town-by-town breakdown, Sixmilebridge has the third-highest proportion of people who drive to work of any town nationwide with over 78% of its population opting for this mode of transport.

Driving a car was the most popular way of commuting in every town in this county while Kilrush has the highest proportion of people who commute on foot.

In Newmarket-on-Fergus meanwhile, more people got the bus to work than in any other town in the county.
