A fresh call is being made for the eviction ban to be reinstated, in light of soaring rents in Clare.

It comes as Ennis has this week been designated a rent pressure zone, which means that rent increases on private rental tenancies, both existing and those being re-let on the market, cannot exceed 2% a year.

The Residential Tenancies Board’s latest report shows the average cost of renting in the county has increased by 17% from €920 between January and March of last year to €1,074 this year.

Clare Social Development Strategic Policy Committee member and Sinn Fein representative, Tommy Guilfoyle, believes the government must respond to the housing crisis with steadfast measures.
