A Clare based tour operator claims a cut in excise duty on fuels doesn’t go far enough.

Cabinet Ministers signed off on plans at a special meeting this morning.

Government resistance to touching excise began to crumble as the war in Ukraine led to another severe spike in the cost of fuel.

The Public Expenditure Minister says the government acknowledges the suffering that high fuel costs are causing many people.

A special cabinet meeting took place this morning, where ministers signed off on a cut the excise duty on fuels.

From midnight tonight, the cost of petrol will fall by 20 cent per litre, diesel prices will decrease by 15 cent per litre, while Green diesel prices will be cut by 2 cent a litre.

Minister Michael McGrath says there is only so much the government can do.

Opposition parties say it’s not enough though, with global supply pressures likely to undo the impact of this measure in a matter of weeks.

The excise cut will cost 320m – with Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald saying it’s not enough

One Clare tour operator agrees.

CEO of Clare-based White Travels International, Marcus White believes that while the move is welcome, it will still be difficult to keep tour buses on the road.
