Fears have been expressed about the knock-on effects of the decision by a prominent Clare building firm to cease trading.
A receiver is to be appointed to Ennis-based Brian McCarthy Contractors which is to cease trading after 36 years in business.
20 jobs will be lost as a direct result of the news, but business representatives in the town say they fear it will have a wider impact.
Brian O’Neill, President of Ennis Chamber of Commerce says “its 20 people who will no longer be receiving a pay packet on a Friday and going spending their money in local shops, buying food, clothes and other goods, so there is definitely a knock-on effect.
The hope for the future would be that these people will find jobs, whether it be in the construction industry or not and hopefully locally.”
