Clare’s Fianna Fáil Senator insists there’s no desire to re-introduce Covid-19 restrictions.

The National Public Health Emergency Team is meeting later to discuss if further measures are needed to tackling the escalating Covid cases.

Clare’s incidence rate of the virus is now at 878.7 per 100,000 people, which is nearly treble the figure from a month ago, while over 1,000 new cases have been confirmed in this county in the past fortnight.

It’s prompted Public Health Midwest to ask people in Clare to limit their social activity, in an effort to change the current trajectory.

A Clare GP says practitioners are now being forced to work additional hours at evenings and weekends to cater for care demands relating to COVID-19.

Lahinch GP Dr Michael Kelleher says COVID is putting a strain on all levels of the health service, with impacts already being seen in non-COVID care settings.

Nationally, around 1 in every 200 people tested positive for Covid 19 over the past two weeks while 543 Covid patients are in hospitals this afternoon with 97 in ICUs.

NPHET will consider the high escalation in cases at a meeting later with a return to full remote working on the agenda, but the Health Minister has already ruled out.

Stephen Donnelly says full remote working and extending vaccine certs aren’t being actively considered by the Government.

He says it’s all about reducing social contacts.

Clare’s Fianna Fáil Senator insists there’s no desire to re-introduce Covid-19 restrictions.

Mountshannon Senator Timmy Dooley says restrictions were relevant when the vaccine wasn’t in existence, but now it’s time to move forward.
