Fears have been expressed that Clare’s Road Programme could suffer as the county council braces itself for further possible staff cuts.

The local authority’s roads budget has fallen by over seven million in the past two years with the workforce reduced by 150 employees, and the County Manager informed local representatives that they may be forced to shed more.

Tom Coughlan expects the public sector to be hit hard by the pledges made by  some of the political parties ahead of the General election and has expressed fears of the potential impact of such a move.

East Clare Fianna Fail Councillor Pat Hayes says this is a pressing concern, and thinks alternative sources of funding will have to be found.
