Clare County Council has stalled plans by Lidl to open a new store in Sixmilebridge.

The local authority has requested further information from the German Supermarket giant after it judged “the scale of the proposed retail unit is excessive and would be contrary to balanced retail development in the wider area”.

Lidl has also been ordered to provide an updated retail assessment as the planning office claims the current report “does not consider the potential impact of the proposed development on the vitality and viability of Sixmilebridge Town Centre.

Fr Harry Bohan who was one of five to lodge a public submission on the plans fears the expansion of multi-national stores would threaten the identity of the town.
