A major expansion of an East Clare graveyard is in the works.

Clare County Council is looking to build an extension onto an existing burial ground outside Scariff which would see the provision of over 170 new plots.

The local authority’s proposed development at Carrowmore in Scariff would involve constructing an extension consisting of 167 double plots and 10 single plots onto the burial ground already on the site.

If approved, improvements would be carried out to the access road including turning bays, while footpaths, drainage and a tarmacadam finish to the parking area would also be provided.

The application proposes constructing two Columbarium walls – which are structures used to store and often display urns containing cremated remains – as well as a Shrine.

Clare County Council states that in accordance with the Habitats Directive, Appropriate Assessment Screening has been carried out, while an Environmental Impact Assessment has concluded there’s no real likelihood of significant effects on the environment arising from the development.

Submissions on the development must be made before August 16th and a decision will be reached by the Council’s planning department by October 10th.
