The local authority is being urged to step in and save a historical building in West Clare that has fallen into disrepair.

The former Kilrush Convent, which is a protected structure, was built in 1860 and served as a school unit the mid 1990s, but has remained derelict and suffered extensive damage through broken windows and water ingress since.

The property is now an active file on Clare County Council’s Derelict Sites Register, and a site inspection will be carried out in due course to determine the extent of the damage.

Kilrush resident Paul Coghlan says it’s of paramount importance the site is restored to serve a purpose.
