Councillors call on local authority to protect farmers on CAP talks

Clare County Council has been urged the Agriculture Minister to protect the interests of Clare farmers in the ongoing talks regarding the common agricultural policy.

It had been hoped that a new CAP deal would be struck in the first half of next year, when Ireland holds the Presidency of the EU, but a breakdown in overall budget talks last month has left this unlikely.

Councillors have argued that it’s vital that Ireland’s overall funding be maintained, and that the interests of smaller farmers, of which Clare has a relatively large proportion, be protected.

Spanish Point Councillor Michael Hillery says farmers here are worried.
