Clare’s Sinn Féin councillor claims mental health patients are being “rushed out the door” amid a capacity crisis in CAMHS in Clare.

Figures released to Councillor Donna McGettigan reveal there are currently just five rooms available in the county’s Child and Adult Mental Health Services facility, with 412 referrals to the service accepted in the last year.

Staff have highlighted the unsuitability of the service to children experiencing mental health issues with 94% of staff saying the clinical environment is not suitable for the support of young people and would put “children supported by this service at risk”.

Speaking following this month’s meeting of Clare County Council, Shannon Councillor McGettigan says there is an emphasis on patient turnover in order to accommodate as many people as possible which she believes does not resolve mental health issues in a meaningful way.
