A climate expert is warning that households must move away from burning solid fuel in open fires or risk the already poor air quality over Ennis worsening.

The county town is currently protected by a ban on burning smoky coal but despite this, a recent EPA report found that cold weather snaps continue to result in a worrying spike in air pollutants in the Ennis area.

The Clean Air Alliance group have been urging the Environment Minister Richard Bruton to extend the ban that’s in place in Ennis to a nationwide one to protect our air quality.

Professor Pat Goodman from the Technological University Dublin is a member of the alliance – he says as a country, it’s vital we move away from traditional household heating.
