Failure rates at Clare’s only NCT centre increased in 2022.

The percentage of vehicles passing the test in Ennis is once again below the national average.

More than 53,000 tests were conducted at the site on the Quin Road last year, a 12 percent jump on demand in 2021.

Of these, just over 63 percent ended in vehicles passing and being classed as safe for the road.

However, the 36.4 percent failure rate was more than 2.5 percent above the national average.

Nearly 1 in 20 vehicles presenting to Ennis’ NCT centre were classified as a ‘dangerous fail’.

It is illegal to drive cars with a ‘dangerous defect’ sticker on them, with the vehicle having to be repaired and re-inspected within 30 days.

Meanwhile, waiting times for an appointment on the Quin Road are now almost four months.

Analysis from Clare FM shows the earliest date available there is the 26th of April.

While the Road Safety Authority told an Oireachtas Committee last year it’s ‘committed’ to a second centre in this county in Shannon, it’s understood little movement on the facility has been made since a project earmarked for the Smithstown Industrial Estate was halted.
