The government is planning to spend over €15 million euro on new direct provision centres to accommodate over 300 asylum seekers in the MidWest.

The Irish Times reports that the Department of Justice has issued tender documents, as they seek providers to operate centres throughout the country.

Collectively, the centres will accommodate 5,500 asylum seekers at a total cost of €320 million, and the planned number of asylum seekers here is the smallest of any region.

The newspaper reports that the Department plans a programme of engagement with communities, once the locations of the centres are finalised.
