National Broadband Ireland say fibre works in Clare under the National Broadband Plan are ‘well underway’.

Figures released to Clare FM show more than half of Clare’s eligible premises under the plan are yet to be surveyed as of the end of last year.

Clare has traditionally lagged behind other areas of the country with the rollout of the plan, with National Broadband Ireland appearing to check poles and cables in this county slower than in other areas.

Over 22,700 premises in Clare such as farms, businesses and schools are eligible under the plan, which is around a third of all premises in the county.

NBI has told Clare FM more than 1,000 of these premises have been passed as of last month and can be placed for connection under the scheme.

The firm says over 3,600 premises in the Kilkishen area have been surveyed to date, with initial builds for works in the likes of Sixmilebridge, Bunratty, Shannon and Spancilhill having also started.

Though NBI has plans for technical surveys in 1,500 premises, it says surveying works in more than 13,000 premises in Clare are ‘still to be scheduled’ as of last month.

It’s estimated that as many as 5,500 premises in this county will be up and running under the plan by the end of 2023, though some areas may have to wait until 2026.
