Rape Crisis Midwest say they welcome what they describe as ‘reasonable’ new proposals to amend current laws surrounding consent.

Cabinet Ministers earlier this week signed off proposals which would require someone accused of rape to show what steps they took to ensure consent was given.

The defence of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be acceptable, with Justice Minister Helen McEntee due to publish the new bill’s details in due course.

Miriam Duffy, who’s Executive Director of Rape Crisis Midwest, is hopeful updated legislation may make the issue of consent more clear.
