Residents of Ballycannon Heights in Meelick are once again faced with a recurrent sewage problem, which has plagued them for years.

The water treatment plant serving the estate of over 60 homes is malfunctioning again, which is causing odour issues for the homeowners in the area.

Ballycannon Heights in Meelick is an estate of 62 homes built in the early 1980s.

But since it was first built, there have been persistent issues with the wastewater treatment plant at the back of the development.

This most recently reared its head last summer, when locals noted that an “obnoxious odour” was making them feel unwell.

Now, the issue has come up again with Irish Water saying it’s continuing to monitor the situation and carry out any work needed to mitigate the issue.

Its statement goes on to say that de-sludging is carried out regularly and will continue to be done as and when it’s needed.

The utility is apologising to residents for the inconvenience caused and that its team is working to safeguard the health and well-being of all involved and to ensure the continuity of drinking water and wastewater services.
