It’s claimed members of the community in Shannon are “suffering”, after concerns raised during the planning process for the Crematorium have “come to pass”.
Independent Councillor Gerry Flynn has brought a motion before the Council calling for issues surrounding parking in the vicinity of Illaunamangh graveyard to be dealt with.
The Council has now confirmed that works are going ahead, as Clare FM’s Melissa McMahon reports.
Clare County Council had been called on to address a number of issues faced by the local community in the vicinity of Illaunamanagh graveyard.
Shannon Independent Councillor Gerry Flynn says people attempting to gain access to the graveyard are unable to access parking, as some people attending the Crematorium have been using spaces provided for the graveyard.
This, he says, has been exacerbated by the closure of the parking area near the main entrance due to illegal encampments.
He’s also highlighted health and safety issues on the road exiting Slí na Mara.
The local authority has now confirmed that the Shannon Municipal District will be undertaking works in the area, which are expected to be completed by early September.
These works will include the installation of new drainage infrastructure, kerbing, a new footpath, a new car parking area and improving the entrance to the Illaunamanagh area.
Councillor Flynn is welcoming the progress, but he’s hit out out over the slow process of having the matter dealt with, saying these issues were raised during the planning process.
Shannon’s Sinn Féin Councillor says parking issues are not confined to the area near the Crematorium and graveyard.
Donna McGettigan says there is a wider issue in the area and has stressed it’s important that the commitment on works is followed up on.
