The newly elected Mayor of Ennis has pledged to deliver on a promise to cut parking charges in a  bid to boost the local retail trade.

Fianna Fail's Pat Daly was unanimously chosen as the town's first citizen at the annual general meeting of the Ennis Municipal District last evening, taking the chains of office from Fine Gael's Johnny Flynn.

During the first year of the Council's new structure, the previous mayor and Councillors called for a reduction in parking charges throughout Ennis,  though that has resulted only in a pilot project to offer free parking on Saturday afternoons this summer.

Members have been told that any wider parking changes will be a matter for their budget talks later this year, and new Mayor Councillor Daly says they're committed to bringing the cost down.
