Doolin Coastguard is urging Clare County Council to press ahead with its 6 million euro local pier development as a matter of urgency.

Revised plans for the contentious project are due before the local authority in just over a week after it withdrew its original blueprint in December after objections by surfers who fear it will affect the areas world class waves.

Other local organisations have also called on the Council to proceed with the plan, which relocates the pier 25 metres further away from the waves however surfers remain fearful of its impact

In its submission to Clare County Council on the revised pier plan – Doolin Coastguard, which is one of the busiest stations in the county stated  the existing pier is regularly over-congested with cars passengers and boats.

The Clare coastguard service which launched 85 times from the existing site last year says current conditions can make it very difficult for its members to launch boats efficiently where time is of the essence and would really appreciate a less congested area to work in.

In a separate submission backed by 150 signatures from local people, Doolin Tourism and Doolin Community Harbour Co-op have also called on the local authority to proceed with the development and outlined why they feel it wont impact on the world class waves off the north Clare coast.

They go on to state that its essential the revised plan is given the green light as they feel its vital for the greater good for all of the users at Doolin pier.

A report on the development is due before Clare County Council in March meeting and a simple majority of the 32 councillors is required to vote the plan through
