Over €16 million in motor tax has been collected in Clare over the past three and a half years.

New figures released by the Department of Transport show Clare County Council’s annual motor tax take has been increasing each year since 2021 – with 2024 on course to be its best year since before the pandemic.

Motor tax is applied to motor vehicles in Ireland for the majority of vehicle owners – with disabled drivers and passengers being the only exceptions.

The charge is collected by local authorities like Clare County Council and is used to maintain and improve public roads.

Since 2021, just shy of €16.5 million in motor tax has been paid by vehicle owners in this county.

Last year alone, over €5 million was collected here and with €2.6 million in motor tax receipts racked up in Clare in the first six months of this year, it’s likely the 2024 end-of-year figure will surpass €5 million again.

While the amount collected in this county so far this year is marginally down on the same period last year when almost €2.7 million was collected, it’s 2% above 2022 levels and 49% above 2021 levels.

Nationally, over €500 million in motor tax was paid in the first six months of 2024 – bringing the total paid since 2021 to more than €3.2 billion.
