Staff at Element 6 in Shannon are to hold a mass protest rally later today.

Workers will stage the lunchtime demo to highlight their anger at the redundancy deal on offer from the diamond manufacturer as part of the Shannon Sustainability.

A mandate for industrial action from SIPTU and TEEU workers was given following a two day ballot last week and notice of the action is expected to be served on the company in the coming days.

The CEO of Element 6, Cyrus Jilla wrote to workers earlier this week urging them to accept the sustainability plan which will keep 243 staff at the Shannon plant but unions say that the issue of the redundancy offer for the 207 workers that will loose their jobs needs to be improved before talks on the new conditions for the remaining staff can begin

The company say that there will be no improvements made on the offer.

Today at 12.30 employees at the former De Beers plant along with ex members of staff and family members will hold a solidarity march from the plant up to the Bank of Ireland in Shannon and back to voice their anger at the company’s stance.
