An Ennis-based addiction counsellor says new minimum unit pricing laws are about reducing the amount of alcohol people drink.

A can of beer cannot be sold for less than €1.70 and a bottle of wine for less than €7.40 under new laws introduced this week.

The government says the aim of new law is to reduce harms caused by the misuse of alcohol in society.

Gerry Murphy, who’s Treatment Team Leader at Bushy Park, says more than half of admissions to the facility are for alcohol-related issues.
