Two men sleeping in public toilets in Ennis have expressed hope their situation will improve following calls for help from the local district court judge.

Ennis District Court heard this week that 52 year old Joseph Pavelka from the Czech Republic and 36 year old Polish man Peter Baram are sleeping in the public toilets in the Market area of the town, due to a lack of money and their alcohol problems.

Mr Pavelka was before the court for offences relating to his drunken behaviour, but Judge Patrick Durkan described his living conditions as a scandal and expressed hope that the court services to help him.

In an interview to be broadcast on Clare FM’s Morning Focus, Joseph Pavelka said he hopes to stay in Ennis and work again, while his friend Peter Baram explained they just want somewhere to live.

Both Joseph Pavelka and Peter Baram are being looked after by volunteers with the HELP the Homeless group in Ennis, who provide them with food and blankets.

Ennis man Anthony McDonagh believes they can improve their own situation if they’re given shelter and help with their addiction problems, and says he’s already seen positive results for others like them.
