Residents of an Ennis district are demanding urgent action on what’s being labelled a “dead river”.

An overgrown section of the River Fergus that runs alongside Corrovorrin on the north side of the county town has been the subject of a motion from Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat Daly at this week’s Ennis Municipal District meeting.

Following Councillor Daly’s call for annual cleaning works to be carried out on the river, Ennis Municipal District has said that a plan will be put in place “to allow for works to be carried out within the next 12 months in line with season constraints”.

Tom Verling, who’s lived in Corrovorrin for almost 50 years, insists the river is an eyesore in its current state and is causing flooding due to the amount of vegetation building up.
