ESB Says Increase Of Water Discharge A Possibility This Weekend

The ESB says it won't increase the flow of water from Parteen Weir today.

A small rise in water levels was recorded in the Springfield area of Clonlara last night and eforts to prevent homes from becoming submerged are continuing.

Council staff, assisted by the Defence Forces, civil Defence and Clare's Fire and Rescue service are continuing to implement flood defence measures as a small rise in water levels has been recorded in Springfield overnight.

Clare County Council has been notified by the OPW that water levels will peak on Sunday night and into Monday morning  with more poor weather forecast for the weekend.

So far, the public water supply in South East Clare remains unaffected by the flooding.

The ESB says it won't increase the flow of water down the River Shannon through Parteen Weir today but it will continue to monitor water levels over the coming days.

But Head of Communications Bernadine Moloney fears that the ESB will have to increase flow over the weekend.

A Clonlara resident who has been forced to leave his home on account of rising flood waters fears his family won't be able to return to their home anytime in the forseeable future.

Mike Hogan and his family evacuated yesterday afternoon as flood water in Springfield reached levels that was no longer safe to wade through.

Mike says it has been a difficult time for his family, particularly his children.

Meanwhile, a Clare Senator says Storm Desmond has highlighted the need for an agressive flood defence programme to be put in place in this country.

Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway is commenting amidst calls for a comprehensive series of works to assist the affected areas.

Speaking in the Seanad, Senator Conway says that Ireland needs to engage with Europe to ensure adequate funding is secured.
