Fears have been expressed that some drivers in Clare have been left without valid insurance cover as a result of failing to report penalty points to their insurer.

The warning from Ennis-area Fianna Fáil Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy comes ahead of a massive clampdown on uninsured drivers as part of measures to combat spiralling insurance costs.

Her party colleague Kerry TD received a number of queries from constituents who were concerned about the validity of their cover, and says some insurers expect drivers to alert them when they've received penalty points as soon as they're received.

Around 6,300 Clare drivers were penalised last year.
