The first black Mayor of Derry says she believes the majority of people welcome and see the benefits of diversity despite a rise in anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Social Democratic and Labour Party Councillor Lilian Seenoi Barr is visiting Clare today and will be opening the Scariff Harbour Festival later on.

Originally from Kenya where she was a strong advocate for social justice, Councillor Seenoi Barr moved to Derry in 2010 and became the first black person elected to public office in Northern Ireland last year before being named the first black Mayor of Derry and the District of Strabane in April.

She insists while those with racist attitudes often have the loudest voices, most people want to see an inclusive society.
