Evidence will continue today in the trial of former Killaloe Doctor Paschal Carmody who denies 9 counts of obtaining money by deception from the families of terminally ill patients.

Ennis Circuit Court has heard evidence that Mr Carmody, of Ballycuggeran, Killaloe told patients, including a 15 year old boy, that he would cure him of a rare cancer  – but the 64 year old former GP has pleaded Not Guilty to all charges.

Day two of this trial will start with further cross examination of Christine O’Sullivan from Co. Wexford – who told the court how she brought her 15 year old son Conor to the East Clinic in Killaloe in July 2002 after he was diagnosed with "ewings sarcoma" and given six months to live.

She fought back tears telling the court that Paschal Carmody said a treatment known as Photodynamic Therapy or PDT would "cure" her son – or "at worst – keep him alive" – Conor died four months later.

A jury of six men and six women is also due to hear from relatives of the late John Sheridan from Kilkenny – who died in November 2002 aged 58.

He sought PDT at the East Clinic in August of the previous year, and its the states case that Paschal Carmody was paid for his treatment on the false pretence that he could cure him.

The 64 year old former doctor has pleaded Not Guilty to 9 charges of defrauding both families of a total of over 16,000 euro.
