Construction on the Gort-Tuam bypass could be moving a step closer.
The road, which will see the extension of the M18 motorway to Galway City and beyond, was discussed by cabinet members at their meeting this week.
The NRA has been given the go-ahead to issue a letter of guarantee for its portion of funding for the project.
The road will be funded on a public private partnership basis, and discussions with overseas investors are ongoing, with hopes that construction will begin some time next year.
