Clare Oireachtas members insist the Government remains focused on challenges ahead, despite the latest controversy.

It follows the resignation of Junior Minister Minister Robert Troy amid ongoing questions over his property portfolio.

Two weeks of a drip feed of information about properties owned by Robert Troy and his declarations of interest ultimately led to his decision to resign last night.

Deputy Troy said while one mistake was excusable, he had made a number of errors.

He insisted in a statement that he never tried to conceal anything and his biggest mistake was a lack of due diligence.

Robert Troy said he had bought his first property aged 20 and wouldn’t apologise for being a landlord – accusing media and opposition of vilifying landlords.

He added he wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth and worked for all he had.

It’s another blow to a Government which during its term has yet to make it through an August without a significant political scandal.

Clare’s Fianna Fáil Senator believes it was the right decision to make, from both his and the Government’s perspective, but he doesn’t think it will trigger an election.

A member of the Oireachtas Oversight Committee says the Tánaiste and the Taoiseach’s judgement on Robert Troy has been ‘appalling’.

Sinn Fein TD Padraig Mac Lochlainn believes there are questions for Micheal Martin and Leao Varadkar to answer on how they handled the situation.

Clare’s Fine Gael TD admits the decision took too long and was a distraction from Government.

But Clarecastle Deputy, Joe Carey says the Government is facing into a number of big challenges over the coming months and that’s where the focus will now turn.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin will consider a replacement for Robert Troy in the coming days.
