The government is defending its track record in tackling overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe has told the Dáil that funding is in place to increase the number of hospital beds and to better support staff, and that 267 beds have been opened across the hospitals network since 2017.

His comments come in spite of near-record levels of overcrowding this week, with 81 and 80 patients on trolleys in Dooradoyle over the past two days.

Responding to Limerick Sinn Féin TD Maurice Quinlivan, Minister Donohoe did agree that funds have to be spent in order to provide the best possible service to patients
