President Michael D Higgins will today be made a freeman of Ennis.

President Higgins, who spent much of his childhood at Ballycar near Newmarket on Fergus and is a former student of St. Flannan’s, is to attend a function in his honour at Ennis Town Council, where he’ll be presented with the local authority’s highest honour.

He’s the second person to receive the award, which was first granted to legendary boxer Muhammad Ali in 2009.

Ennis Town manager Ger Dollard says the President is a worthy recipient

Following this afternoon’s ceremony at Ennis Town Council, President Higgins will make the short trip to Ennis Cathedral for a liturgy of praise and thanksgiving celebrating the 180th anniversary of it’s dedication.

He will then travel to East Clare for functions at the East Clare Community Co-Op in Scarriff, and at the Lough Graney Youth Club in Flagmount.
