At least 300 Clare women travelled to the UK for an abortion in the four years up to 2011.

While the number of Irish women undergoing the procedure fell that year, the UK’s Department of Health says the numbers travelling from Clare was at it’s highest level.

83 women gave Clare addresses to abortion clinics in the UK when having a termination carried out in 2011.

Figures released to Clare FM by the UK Department of Health also show that a 216 women did likewise over the previous three years.

Statistics for 2011 show the broad age spectrum of Clare women who have opted to have an abortion.  Nearly half were in their twenties, while some were aged under 18 and others were at least forty.

The figures only count people who gave addresses in Clare – over the four year period, 2300 Irish-based women did not state their county of origin.

Family Planning groups say the figures are under-representative, as other patients give British addresses of family members or friends or travel other countries.

These too have not been counted, but nonetheless 4,149 Irish women underwent an abortion in 2011.
