Iconic West Clare Shop To Close After Over 200 Years Of Operations

A West Clare institution is set to close an iconic element of its business after over 200 years of serving the community, tourists, and thousands of travelling fishermen.

Keane’s in Carrigaholt is understood to be just one of two joint pub and grocery stores in the county, and although the pub will remain, the shop side is set to close and will be redesigned in due course.

The family run business has pointed to difficulty sustaining energy costs which have doubled since pre-covid times, and claims failure from governments to provide sewerage infrastructure is also significantly restricting local growth.

 

Pakie Keane, who alongside his wife Margaret owns and runs the store, is confident Carrigaholt can become the “Doolin of West Clare”, but insists a wastewater scheme is of paramount importance to the region’s future.
