Investigation into death of East Clare Prisoner

Separate investigations are underway into the death of an East Clare man in Portlaoise Prison.

61 year old Sean Leamy of Main Street Tulla- A convicted sex offender was discovered in his cell in the Midland jail on Tuesday evening.

It’s believed he suffered a heart attack

Sean Leamy, a former Clare County Council graveyard official was jailed last May for 6 years after being found guilty of abusing five boys over a 27 year period.

He was also convicted in the "graves for sale case" – whereby he stole over 20 thousand euro paid by grieving families to the local authority for burial plots.

Last Tuesday evening the 61 year old Tulla man was discovered in an unconscious state in his cell and despite efforts by prison officers to revive him – he was pronounced dead at the scene – Its believed he suffered a heart attack – but a full post-mortem will be carried out.

Separate investigations into his death are now being carried out by the Irish Prison Service and gardaí  -as would be standard practice with all deaths in custody.
