Ireland and the UK will sign an historic agreement today reinforcing their commitment to preserving the Common Travel Area.

The two countries will also commit to further cracking down on illegal immigration and questionable asylum claims.

The Common Travel Area is made up of Ireland, the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man and came into being in the 1920s, to make it easier for citizens to travel between the UK and Ireland.

The move could create considerable savings for both countries on removing foreign nationals with no right to stay.
