Irish J1 Students arrested over passport tampering

 

Irish students are being warned that they could receive jail time if they tamper or modify their passports while abroad.

The warning comes after a number of Irish J1 students were arrested in the US this summer for attempting to change the date of birth on their passports.

The legal age of entry into nightclubs and pubs there is 21 – but many Irish students are younger than that when they travel to the States.

Tampering with a passport is a federal offence in the US and can result in being fined, imprisoned or refused future access to the country.
