Irish Water is being criticised after it emerged that householders may have to spend up to 5-thousand euro replacing lead pipes.

People who live in homes built before 1980 have been warned to check for lead.

Irish Water will pay to replace the pipes outside, but homeowners have to pay to strip out the lead piping inside the property – there is a Government grant available though.

Richard Boyd Barrett of Triple A People Before Profit says the taxpayer always ends up paying.
