It appears the mystery has been solved over what type of whale actually washed up on the north Clare shoreline earlier this month.

Images sent to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group confirm the carcass to be that of a long-finned pilot whale and not the Narwhal as previously believed.

The story first hit the headlines earlier this month following sightings of the dead mammal on the shoreline in Liscannor but it was subsequently disposed of before its breed could be identified.

The Narwhal isn’t native to our shores and Simon Berrow from the Clare based Irish Whale and Dolphin group admits its slightly disappointing that it turned out not to be the Liscannor whale ..
