A 26 year old Ennis woman has been convicted of harming a mother and her toddler when she doused them with petrol.

Majella Mc McCarthy was also found guilty of doing the same to her own father.and of producing a knife during the course of the same incident at Spanish Point Road in Miltown Malbay on the 4th of March last.

After just 35 minutes of deliberations the jury at the Circuit Court in Ennis returned guilty verdicts on all four charges facing the 26 year old from the Galway Road in Ennis.

During the two day trial the court heard Ms McCarthy had doused her father with petrol before going over to the parked car where Cree woman Ms Mary Kelly was sitting with her daughter Ashling.

She opened the back door of the car and poured petrol over the 18 month old and then on Ms Kelly when she ran to her daughter.

The jury also found Ms McCarthy guilty of producing a knife at her parent’s home in Miltown Malbay on the same date.

The court heard evidence from Ms McCarthy’s parents as well as arresting Gardai and Ms Kelly who spoke of her panic at seeing a woman she didn’t know douse her child with petrol and then fumble in her pocket.

After the jury returned their verdicts, sentencing was briefly adjourned but is now underway and expected to conclude tomorrow when psychiatric evidence is expected to be heard
